About PNG to WebP

The PNG to WebP converter re-encodes PNG images as WebP, a modern web format that usually produces much smaller files. Unlike JPG, WebP supports transparency, so logos, icons and cut-out product images keep their see-through backgrounds while taking up less space.

It is aimed at web developers, bloggers and shop owners who want faster pages without giving up transparent graphics. You control the quality, see the size change before downloading and can convert up to 20 images in one batch. Everything runs in your browser, with no upload and no account.

How to use PNG to WebP

  1. Drop PNG files onto the upload box, click Choose image, or paste from the clipboard.
  2. Check that WebP is selected as the output format.
  3. Adjust the Quality slider and compare the result preview and file size with the original.
  4. Click Download WEBP for one image, or Download ZIP for a batch.

Features

  • Keeps transparent and semi-transparent areas from the PNG.
  • Quality slider from 5% to 100%, with 82% as the starting point.
  • Shows the percentage size change so you can judge the saving at a glance.
  • Converts up to 20 images, 100 MB in total, and bundles them into a ZIP.
  • Works on images up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels without uploading them.

Common uses

  • Speeding up a website by replacing heavy PNG graphics and screenshots.
  • Shrinking transparent product photos for an online store.
  • Reducing the size of image assets in a web app or landing page.
  • Preparing blog images that need to look sharp but load quickly on mobile.

Tips

  • Keep your original PNG files; WebP compression is applied at the quality you choose and cannot be undone.
  • For tiny icons with only a few colors, compare sizes: PNG is sometimes already smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP support transparent backgrounds?

Yes. WebP stores an alpha channel just like PNG, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges such as shadows are kept after conversion. This is the main advantage of WebP over JPG for logos and cut-out images.

Why is my WebP file bigger than the PNG?

Small graphics with a handful of flat colors are already compressed very well by PNG, and a high WebP quality setting can end up larger. Lower the quality slider and check the result size, or keep that particular image as PNG.

Do all browsers support WebP images?

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP. Some older desktop software, email clients and print services may still not open it, so keep a PNG or JPG copy if you need to share files outside the web.

Is PNG to WebP conversion lossless?

The converter uses WebP’s quality setting, which means lossy compression. At high quality the difference is very hard to see, but pixels may not be identical to the PNG. Keep the original if you need an exact copy.

Can I convert PNG to WebP online for free without signing up?

Yes. Use this tool without an account or payment. Files are processed in your browser. Download the result after processing; supported formats and browser requirements are described above. Conversion can change quality, transparency or layout depending on the formats.
