About Character counter

The character counter puts the character total first, then shows a second total with whitespace removed. It also reports words, sentences, paragraphs, lines and estimated reading time, so you can check both a short limit and the overall length of a draft.

Use it when preparing a caption, form answer, product title or translation measured by character count. The totals update as the input changes. Counts use Unicode code points rather than JavaScript UTF-16 code units, which matters for many emoji and less common characters.

How to use Character counter

  1. Paste or type the text, or choose Open file to read a text file up to 2 MB.
  2. Read Characters for the total including spaces and line breaks.
  3. Read Without spaces for the total after all whitespace is removed.
  4. Edit the draft and watch the totals update; select Reset to clear the input.

Features

  • Leads with the character count, with words and other statistics in the same view.
  • Includes spaces, tabs and line breaks in Characters; excludes them in Without spaces.
  • Counts Unicode code points, not bytes or rendered screen width.
  • Updates locally without submitting the draft to a server.

Common uses

  • Checking a short title before pasting it into a publishing form.
  • Comparing translation lengths when an assignment is priced by character.
  • Reducing a caption or description to meet an external length limit.

Tips

  • If a destination counts weighted characters, grapheme clusters or URLs specially, check the text there before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

Does an emoji count as one character?

A single Unicode code point counts as one. Emoji built from several code points, including family emoji, flags and skin-tone sequences, can count as several. A platform may use different rules, so its own limit is the final check.

Are spaces and line breaks counted?

Yes in Characters. The Without spaces total removes every whitespace character, including tabs and line breaks, not just ordinary spaces.

Is this a byte counter?

No. Character counts and file sizes differ. For example, a non-Latin letter can require several UTF-8 bytes while counting as one code point here.

Is my text uploaded or saved?

The tool processes the text in this page, on your device. It does not send the input to a conversion service or save it to an account. Advertising and ordinary website requests are separate from this local text processing. Copy or download any result you want to keep before leaving the tool.
