About SMS QR code
The SMS QR code generator makes a code that opens the phone’s messaging app with a recipient number and message text already in place. The person scanning only has to tap Send, which makes it quick to reply, vote, opt in or ask for information by text.
The code uses the common SMSTO format and is created in your browser. Spaces, dashes and brackets in the phone number are removed automatically, so only digits and a leading plus sign are encoded.
How to use SMS QR code
- Enter the phone number that should receive the message, ideally with the country code.
- Type the message that should appear, for example a keyword such as JOIN.
- Scan the preview to check that the messaging app opens with the right number and text.
- Download the code as PNG or SVG.

Does the SMS send automatically when scanned?
No. Scanning opens the messaging app with the number and text filled in. The person can change the message and must tap Send, and their carrier’s normal text message rates apply.
Should I include the country code?
Yes, if anyone might scan from another country. A number with a plus sign and country code, such as +44 or +1, works from anywhere, while a local number may only work for people on networks in the same country.
Does an SMS QR code work on iPhone and Android?
The SMSTO format is recognized by the built-in camera on most current phones and by QR scanner apps. Support still varies between devices and apps, so scan the preview with the phones your audience uses before printing.
What is the difference between an SMS and a phone QR code?
An SMS code opens a new text message to your number with optional preset text. A phone code opens the dialer to call the number. Choose SMS for keyword replies and opt-ins, and a phone code when you want people to call.
