How to Edit Text in a PDF
Change existing text in a PDF in your browser. Learn why PDF text is hard to edit, how to keep the original font, and what cannot be changed.
Why PDF text is hard to edit
A PDF stores letters at exact positions on a page rather than in paragraphs, so it behaves more like a drawing than a document.
It also usually holds only the letters it uses. That is why a newly typed letter can make a line look different.
How to edit a PDF step by step
- Open Edit PDF and drop your file onto the page.
- Select the line you want to change.
- Type the new text and press Enter.
- Check the updated page, then select Save PDF.
How to keep the original font
Use letters that already appear in the document where you can. Edit PDF reuses the fonts inside the file and warns you when it has to use the closest match.
Keep the new text about as long as the old text. Each line stays where it started and does not push other text along.
What this method cannot do
Scanned pages are pictures, so they have no text to change.
Editing a signed PDF can invalidate its digital signature, and a password-protected PDF must be unlocked first.
