About Location QR code
The location QR code generator encodes a pair of GPS coordinates as a geo: link. When scanned, supported phones open the point in a maps app, so people can see where to go and start directions without searching for an address.
Coordinates work for places that have no street address, such as a trailhead, a gate on a large site, a parking area or a meeting point in a park. Enter latitude and longitude in decimal degrees and the code is built in your browser.
How to use Location QR code
- Find the spot in your map app and copy its coordinates in decimal degrees, for example 51.5007, -0.1246.
- Enter the latitude in the first field and the longitude in the second.
- Scan the preview to check that the right location opens.
- Download the code as PNG or SVG.
Features
- Creates a standard geo:latitude,longitude link.
- Checks the range: latitude from −90 to 90 and longitude from −180 to 180.
- Accepts negative values for southern latitudes and western longitudes.
- Short payload, so the code stays simple and easy to scan.
Common uses
- Guiding guests to a wedding venue, campsite or event entrance.
- Marking trailheads, viewpoints or parking on outdoor signs.
- Helping delivery drivers find a loading dock or side gate.
Tips
- Most map apps show a spot’s coordinates when you long-press or right-click it. Copy them from there to avoid typing errors.
Frequently asked questions
What coordinate format does it accept?
Decimal degrees, the format most map apps show, such as 51.5007 for latitude and -0.1246 for longitude. Degrees, minutes and seconds like 51°30′N are not accepted, so convert them to decimal first.
Which map app opens when the code is scanned?
The phone decides. Android usually offers an installed maps app, while support on iPhone depends on the scanner and iOS version, and some setups only show the coordinates as text. Test with the phones your visitors are likely to use.
Why do I get an error about latitude and longitude?
Latitude must be between -90 and 90 and longitude between -180 and 180. The most common cause is swapping the two values. Latitude comes first; it says how far north or south the place is.
Is a location code better than a map link?
A geo: code holds only coordinates, so it is short and does not depend on any map service. A Google Maps or Apple Maps link, made with the URL tab, opens that service on every phone. Choose the link when consistent behavior matters most.
