About QR code colors

The QR code colors tool lets you set the color of the code itself and of its background, so it matches your brand, packaging or print design. The preview updates instantly, and every content type is available, from links to WiFi logins and contact cards.

Color is where many QR codes stop scanning. The tool checks the contrast between your two colors and warns you when it is too low, or when you have made a light code on a dark background, which some scanners cannot read.

How to use QR code colors

  1. Choose the content type and fill in the fields, for example a URL.
  2. Select the Foreground swatch and pick the color of the code’s modules.
  3. Select the Background swatch and pick the color behind them.
  4. Check for a contrast warning, scan the preview, then download PNG or SVG.

Features

  • Any foreground and background color from your system color picker, including exact hex values.
  • Warns when the contrast ratio between the two colors drops below 3:1.
  • Warns when the foreground is lighter than the background, creating an inverted code.
  • Colors are applied to both the PNG and the SVG download.
  • Works with every content type: URL, text, WiFi, email, phone, SMS, contact, location and event.

Common uses

  • Matching a QR code to brand colors on packaging, labels or signage.
  • Placing a code on a colored flyer or menu without a white box around it.
  • Creating seasonal or event-themed codes for print campaigns.

Tips

  • Keep the code dark and the background light. Navy, deep green or burgundy on white or cream usually scans well.
  • Test a printed sample, since colors on paper often look lighter than on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Which color combinations scan best?

A dark foreground on a light background with strong contrast between them. Black on white is the safest, but dark brand colors on white or pale tints also work. Avoid pairs of similar brightness, such as red on green or mid-blue on gray.

Why does the tool warn about light-on-dark codes?

Scanners are designed for dark modules on a light background. Many phone cameras can read inverted codes, but some scanners and older apps cannot. If you want a light-on-dark look, test it on several devices before printing.

What does the low contrast warning mean?

It appears when the contrast ratio between your two colors is below 3:1, measured with the same luminance formula used for web accessibility checks. Below that level, cameras may struggle to separate the modules from the background, especially in poor light.

Can I make a transparent background or a gradient?

No. The tool uses one solid foreground color and one solid background color. For a seamless look, pick a background color that matches the surface where the code will be printed.

Do colors affect how much data the code holds?

No. Capacity depends only on the content and the error correction level. Colors change the appearance, but poor contrast can make an otherwise valid code unreadable.
