About Text to binary

Text to binary converts the UTF-8 byte sequence of a string into groups of eight zeros and ones. Spaces between the groups make each byte easy to identify.

ASCII letters generally need one byte each, while many accented characters and emoji use multiple UTF-8 bytes. The output is therefore a byte representation of the text, not a separate eight-bit number for every displayed character.

How to use Text to binary

  1. Type, paste or open the original text.
  2. Keep Text → Binary selected.
  3. Inspect the eight-bit groups in Output.
  4. Copy or download the binary string, or select Binary → Text to test the reverse conversion.

Features

  • Uses UTF-8 encoding for the source string.
  • Pads every encoded byte to eight binary digits.
  • Separates byte groups with ordinary spaces.
  • Includes original spaces and newlines as encoded bytes.

Common uses

  • Teaching the relationship between text encoding and binary bytes.
  • Making a binary fixture from a short known string.
  • Comparing ASCII and multibyte Unicode characters.

Tips

  • Keep the separating spaces if you want to decode the result with Binary to text.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ASCII encoding?

ASCII characters have the same byte values in UTF-8. Non-ASCII text is represented by multibyte UTF-8 sequences rather than an extended-ASCII code page.

Why do some letters produce several groups?

One group represents one byte. A non-ASCII character can require two, three or four UTF-8 bytes.

Does the output hide the original message?

No. Binary notation is a representation, not encryption. It can be reversed by converting the byte values back to text.

Is my text uploaded or saved?
